Profile

Amid a rich history dating back to 9th November 1997,
Hi! Club, the abbreviation for ‘Hearing Impaired Club’, attains a heritage of 14 years in 2011.

With the aim to unite the hearing and our non-hearing counterparts,
Hi! Club seeks to instill passion in its members by offering exclusive sign language courses executed by our dedicated instructors and even opportunities to put to use the obtained signing skills with the prospect of interacting with the hearing-impaired effectively.

Besides acquiring the ability to communicate with the hearing-impaired, Hi! Club engages in song signing and sign language drama performances actively for both school based and external events, occasionally tying up with Singapore Association for the Deaf, commonly known as ‘SADEAF’.

Definitely dusted with the elements of camaraderie and enjoyment, Hi! Club sign language courses teach ‘Signed Exact English’ (SEE) as according to SADEAF’s customary version of sign language, enabling Hi! Clubbers to efficiently converse and reach out especially to our local hearing-impaired friends.

The courses are divided into three categories mainly, Basic A, Basic B and Intermediate. All of which cater to our members respective signing abilities through stages, progressing only upon completion of the earlier phase. Instructor courses are also available to students who successfully accomplish their Intermediate course.

Our lessons are conducted once a week commencing from 6.30pm, for 2 hours each session with the choices Monday or Thursday. There are 8 sessions in total per semester.

Furthermore, our traditional Hi! Club camps adhere to our exceptional custom of signing through fun and excitement while reinforcing and enhancing our signing capabilities attained during lessons, facilitating the improvement of our sign language capacity in a natural manner. Ultimately, while making friends and building relationships through stimulating activities meticulously planned out for the Hi! Club’s mission, Hi! Clubbers always benefit relentlessly. Be it socially or intellectually, the knowledge gained as a Hi! Clubber will absolutely remain an asset to your advancement in living, much awaits you.

Youth Vibes

Youth Vibes is a youth conference organised by the NUS volunteer network to increase awareness about service and to promote volunteerism among youth in Singapore. Its primary objectives are to provide a platform and network for youths

1. To share and benefit through collective intelligence

2. To promote creativity, initiatives and social responsibility

3. To bond with others with common passion

4. To define their generation

To facilitate this, the conference has been divided into two halves. The morning half is designed to raise awareness, with speeches by a famous philanthropist and experienced volunteers, interactive workshop and information sessions about the various facets of volunteerism and how they address the problems facing society, and how they develop an individual. This section culminates in a speech by another lecturer or student experienced in social work highlighting the limitations in the current system and emphasising the need for newer, innovative ideas.

The second half is a focus group discussion session which is designed to encourage the participants to brainstorm the innovative ideas to solve the various issues faced by volunteerism. The objective of the discussion and brainstorming would be to come up with a concrete volunteering solution to a problem such as child abuse, old age neglect or handicapped rights, with an innovative twist to overcome existing limitations. This way, participants would have to think deeply about the problem and reach a consensus, and also have to find a way to really solve the issue.

This conference aims to help both prospective and experienced volunteers to help discover what section of society they really want to help, which issue needs redressal and to learn how they would fit into the big picture. Ultimately, the participants would learn how to make a difference, and be able to analyse how their actions do help others.

Time: 9am to 3pm (Refreshments provided)

Venue: NUSSU student lounge at Yusof Ishak House (NUS)
